Erste Promotion im Innovations- und Karrierecenter erfolgreich abgeschlossen
Am 21. August 2025 hat Bastian Prell seine Doktorarbeit als erster Doktorand im strukturierten Promotionsprogramm des Innovations- und Karrierecenters Integrated Engineering (IKC IE) der TH Wildau erfolgreich verteidigt. +++ English version below +++
In einem Seminarraum im Lehrgebäude 10 am Zentralcampus der Brandenburgischen Technischen Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) war es dann soweit – alles war vorbereitet, die Technik stand und auch das Wetter zeigte sich von seiner besten Seite. Hier, wo die Fakultät 5 - Wirtschaft, Recht und Gesellschaft an der BTU verortet ist, hat Bastian Prell am 21. August 2025 seine Doktorarbeit mit dem Titel „Akzeptanz, Nutzung und Diffusion industrieller und digitaler Methoden im Handwerk“ verteidigt.
Vor der Prüfungskommission, bestehend aus Prof. Alexander Martin, Prof. Christiane Hipp, Prof. Silke Michalk, Prof. Jörg Reiff-Stephan und Dr. Sophia Bittner-Zähr, hat Bastian Prell die Motivation zum Promotionsthema, die angewendete Methodik und wesentliche Ergebnisse seiner Arbeit vorgestellt und sich anschließend den kritischen Fragen der Kommission gestellt. Das Thema ist herausfordernd wie zukunftsweisend.
Im Fokus: Innovationen im Handwerk
Bastian Prell ging den Fragen nach, wie Innovationen im Handwerk ablaufen, welche Rollen den beteiligten individuellen und gesellschaftlichen Akteuren zukommen und welche Besonderheiten für das Durchsetzen von insbesondere digitalen Technologien in der Handwerksbranche relevant sind. In Form von Interviews, Umfragen und konkreten Fallstudien zum Einsatz von u.a. Exoskeletten oder Virtual-Reality-(VR)-Ansätzen in Handwerksbetrieben suchte er hierfür Lösungen.
Der Zugang zu Handwerksbetrieben war nicht immer einfach, aber Bastian Prell blieb hier hartnäckig und hat kreative Wege gefunden. Die praktischen Arbeiten hat er in der Forschungsgruppe „iC3@Smart Production“ von Prof. Jörg-Reiff Stephan durchgeführt und wurde dabei von Frau Prof. Christiane Hipp am Lehrstuhl „Allgemeine Betriebswirtschaftslehre, insbesondere Organisation und Unternehmensführung“ an der BTU betreut.
Vielfältige Unterstützung
Unterstützung erfuhr Bastian Prell auch durch das strukturierte Promotionsprogramm im Innovations- und Karrierecenter Integrated Engineering (IKC IE), in dessen Rahmen er eine Promotionsstelle innehatte.
Im Rahmen des Förderprogramms „FH-Zukunft-BB“ des Ministeriums für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur (MWFK) des Landes Brandenburg haben die TH Wildau, die HNE Eberswalde und die BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg ihre Forschungs- und Lehrkompetenzen im IKC IE gebündelt, um kooperative Promotionen systematischer und strukturierter anzugehen und die Entwicklung einer nachhaltigen Promotionskultur an Fachhochschulen zu fördern.
Seine Ergebnisse hat Bastian Prell auf mehreren Konferenzen mit Wissenschaftler:innen diskutiert und in peer-reviewed Artikeln in einschlägigen Journalen veröffentlicht.
Mit seinen Ergebnissen konnte er sodann auch die Prüfungskommission umfassend überzeugen, so dass Bastian Prell seine Promotion mit dem Doktorgrad eines Doktors der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften „Dr. rer. pol.“ mit dem Prädikat „magna cum laude“ nun überaus erfolgreich abschließen konnte!
Anschließend konnte in kleinem Kreis bei Sekt und Kuchen auf diesen Erfolg angestoßen werden und natürlich durfte auch der obligatorische, liebevoll gestaltete Doktorhut nicht fehlen.
Wir gratulieren ganz herzlich zur Promotion und freuen uns auf weitere Aktivitäten an und mit der TH Wildau, sei es als Postdoktorand in der Forschungsgruppe „iC3@Smart Production“ oder als Mitgründer des EXIST-geförderten Start-ups Notivo.

On August 21, 2025, Bastian Prell successfully defended his doctoral thesis as the first doctoral candidate in the structured doctoral program at the Innovation and Career Center Integrated Engineering (IKC IE) at TH Wildau. +++ German version below +++
In a seminar room in teaching building 10 on the central campus of the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), the time had come – everything was prepared, the engineering was in place, and even the weather was at its best. Here, where Faculty 5 – Business and Law is located at the BTU, Bastian Prell defended his doctoral thesis entitled “Acceptance, Use, and Diffusion of Industrial and Digital Methods in the Skilled Trades” on August 21, 2025.
Before the examination board, consisting of Prof. Alexander Martin, Prof. Christiane Hipp, Prof. Silke Michalk, Prof. Jörg Reiff-Stephan, and Dr. Sophia Bittner-Zähr, Bastian Prell presented his motivation for the doctoral topic, the methodology used, and the main results of his work, and then answered the critical questions posed by the board. The topic is both challenging and forward-looking.
Focus: Innovations in the skilled trades
Bastian Prell explored questions such as how innovation occurs in skilled trades, what roles the individual and social actors involved play, and what factors are particularly relevant for the implementation of digital technologies in the skilled trades sector. He sought solutions to these questions through interviews, surveys, and concrete case studies on the use of exoskeletons and virtual reality (VR) approaches in skilled trades businesses, among other things.
Access to craft businesses was not always easy, but Bastian Prell remained persistent and found creative ways to achieve his goal. He carried out the practical work in Prof. Jörg-Reiff Stephan's “iC3@Smart Production” research group and was supervised by Prof. Christiane Hipp at the Chair of General Business Administration, in particular Organization and Corporate Management, at the BTU.
Diverse support
Bastian Prell also received support from the structured doctoral program at the Innovation and Career Center Integrated Engineering (IKC IE), where he held a doctoral position.
As part of the “FH-Zukunft-BB” funding program of the Brandenburg Ministry of Science, Research, and Culture (MWFK) of the State of Brandenburg, TH Wildau, HNE Eberswalde, and BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg have pooled their research and teaching expertise in the IKC IE in order to approach cooperative doctorates in a more systematic and structured manner and to promote the development of a sustainable doctoral culture at universities of applied sciences.
Bastian Prell discussed his findings with scientists at several conferences and published them in peer-reviewed articles in relevant journals.
His findings also thoroughly impressed the examination board, enabling Bastian Prell to successfully complete his doctorate with a degree in economics and social sciences (“Dr. rer. pol.”) and a grade of “magna cum laude”!
Afterwards, this success was celebrated in a small circle with champagne and cake, and of course the obligatory, lovingly designed doctoral cap was not to be missed.
We congratulate him warmly on his doctorate and look forward to further activities at and with TH Wildau, whether as a postdoctoral researcher in the “iC3@Smart Production” research group or as co-founder of the EXIST-funded start-up Notivo.
